Salacia is the Roman Goddess of the sea. Partner to Neptune, together they presided over the ocean. Apparently when Neptune fell in love with her and wanted to marry her, that coy little lass hid from him in the depths of the Atlantic because she was intimidated, so he sent a dolphin to find her and persuade her to be queen of the ocean. This heroic wingman or “fin man” was rewarded with a place in the heavens where he now forms the constellation, Delphinus. Salacia is depicted in art wearing a seaweed crown, driving in a pearl shell chariot drawn by dolphins.
